Toledo Engine
with John R. Keim Rod

This engine looks almost exactly like a Toledo engine and is confused with it many times.  I think the difference is in how the bottoms of the crankcases are bolted together.  The reason we think it is a Keim engine is because that name is cast on the side of the connecting rod inside a diamond shaped boss.  As with all Toledo or Keim engines the flat side plates are lost.  I have no idea if this was sold to Toledo or to any other steam automobile manufacturer.  The reason we know what it is is because of the accompanying ad found in an 1899 Scientific American magazine.  This engine was purchased when someone was cleaning out a garage and a lifetime collection of engines that included a 20 hp White and a 10 hp Stanley boiler rusted through.   John R.
