This is an outstanding example of the Williams Brothers’ work. It is a V-4 with 1 ¾” bore, uniflow, with very small poppet valve auxiliary exhaust valves. The intake valves are cam operated piston valves of different design. As one can see there are 4 drilled holes that take steam from the steam chest into the valve housing. The piston valves have 4 flat large diameters turned in them so the valve stem only has to move about 3/8” to open all of the 4 ports all the way. By having a cam operated valve train, the valve stays open until it needs to be closed. It is a rapid opening and closing system.
When we got the engine it had been run hard and hot and we had to soak it in a barrel of kerosene for a year before we could beat on it enough to free things up. Other than that it is in good shape and very ruggedly built.
